Our geotechnical consultants in Toronto and Kawartha Lakes help construction companies, concrete companies, and contractors all across Ontario, Canada with your material testing needs, ensuring you build with quality materials on a safe, stable foundation.

We help with public works projects, redesign or infrastructure projects, roadways, and small residential to high-rise buildings. Our site investigation services include testing native soils and analyzing soil to determine its load-bearing characteristics. PRI’s certified geotechnical laboratory testing technicians and engineers help analyze most everything that touches the Earth, ensuring you meet your quality goals for your construction project’s success.

What is geotechnical testing? The role of geotechnical lab testing is to determine particle size, strength, water content, and other properties of soil, concrete, and aggregate, helping ensure any structure that touches the Earth rests on a firm foundation and is built with the material quality needed to ensure it is long-lasting and meets regulatory requirements. No matter your geotechnical testing needs, PRI Engineering is here to help with a broad range of geotechnical laboratory services.

Types of Geotech Laboratory Testing Services We Offer

PRI Engineering’s geotechnical laboratory testing services include soils, concrete, and aggregate testing for all your construction and infrastructure projects. Our CCIL-certified geotechnical lab is stocked with state-of the art equipment to ensure you get the information you need to build your project on a solid foundation with quality materials.

The following outlines the typical testing process in our:

  • We receive soil, concrete, or aggregate samples from you or visit your site.
  • Our expert geotechnical laboratory technicians perform appropriate material testing to determine particle size, gradation, water content, or other properties.
  • You receive a comprehensive report with expert recommendations.
  • We store your samples for a project-specific timeframe or dispose of the samples when you get the results, depending on your needs. We track every sample’s chain of custody throughout the entire testing process.

Your comprehensive geotechnical report is full of complete information about your soil, concrete, and aggregate samples, along with recommendations to help you make important decisions about your construction project.

Soil Testing Services

Laboratory soil testing is important both to ensure the ground can withstand the weight of your building or other infrastructure and to help you adjust your building plans accordingly. Proper geotechnical testing helps ensure you build on a solid foundation for a structure that lasts.

Our expert soil testing technicians perform a variety of geotechnical laboratory services. We analyze particle size to classify the soil and determine and define soil characteristics, using laboratory soil testing methods such particle size distribution. We perform liquid limit and plasticity testing to determine the soils behavior in relation to water content. Measuring moisture density as well helps us determine soil compaction so you know if your soil is stable. To help our laboratory technicians test your soil, we use an oven to dry material, scales, proctor molds and hammers to determine Proctor standard dry density, and other equipment in our CCIL-certified soil testing laboratory.

When you receive your soil testing report, you can use that information to ensure your site soil meets your needs and to help you adjust your building plans to suit these native soil attributes.

Concrete Testing Services

Concrete varies widely depending on the materials it contains, its air content, and other factors. Concrete laboratory testing helps ensure your building materials have the strength and consistency you need to support your structures while meeting regulatory requirements. PRI Engineering’s CCIL-certified concrete testing laboratory performs compression testing and common field tests to help you meet your quality goals.

Our concrete testing labs prepare and cure your concrete samples, then perform concrete compression testing by applying compressive axial load until the samples fail. This determines the concrete’s strength. To help us do this, our well-equipped geotechnical laboratory includes a concrete grinder for preparation and a concrete compressive machine.

When you receive your concrete testing report, you can use that information to ensure your concrete meets the quality and consistency you need for your project’s success.

Aggregate Testing Services

Variation in aggregate size, shape, strength, and durability has a big impact on quality and consistency. Our aggregate laboratory testing services help ensure your roads meet your client’s requirements with lasting, consistent quality. You may also need aggregate testing for materials you bring to your construction site or recycled on-site aggregates and disposal testing, to meet standards and for permitting.

PRI Engineering’s laboratory testing includes determining the percentage of crushed (LS-607) and flat versus elongated particles (LS-608) in your coarse aggregate, as well as the percentage of asphalt-coated particles (LS-621). Our aggregate testing methods include washing mineral aggregates finer than 75um sieve (LS-601/ASTM C117), sieve analysis (LS-602), and dry aggregate preparation to determine physical constraints (LS-600). Our aggregate laboratory testing equipment includes a coarse aggregate sieve shaker, fine aggregate sieve shaker, and scales to help us provide you with comprehensive geotechnical laboratory services.

When you receive your aggregate testing report, you can use that information to ensure your construction materials meet the quality and consistency you desire for your project’s success.

Geotechnical Reports and Recommendations

Our comprehensive geotechnical reports accurately record and report all laboratory testing data. If you are wondering how to read a material test report from PRI Engineering, you can be confident that your report conforms to CCIL certification standards. Our geotechnical laboratory testing reports and expert recommendations help you know how to build your project with materials meeting your high-quality standards, for a build that stands the test of time.

Common Questions

You may have geotechnical laboratory services questions, including the purpose of geotechnical testing, when to request geotechnical tests, and how long it takes to receive a material testing report. Browse the FAQ below or contact us with any other questions and to see how PRI Engineering can help ensure you get the testing you need for a successful construction project.

What is the purpose of certified laboratory testing services?

Our certified laboratory testing services provide enhanced confidence in your testing results compared to worker-run field tests alone. You encounter fewer disputes during your construction project as our independent laboratory technicians verify facts about your concrete, aggregate, and soil, backed by our CCIL certification and engineering expertise. Most of all, these geotechnical lab tests raise the standards of excellence, ensuring you meet regulatory requirements and your company’s quality goals, and promote continuous improvement as you achieve high quality construction from site survey to project completion.

How long does a material testing report take?

Start the material testing process by sending a sample to our laboratory or inviting our team to your construction site to take samples. Although our Kawartha Lakes location helps save even more time for construction companies working in the area, we offer quick turnaround across Ontario. When we have the samples in our geotech lab, we perform the required tests, then send you the material test report to read. The Hydrodymeter test requires a minimum of three days to run, and the sedimentation process to measure soil size distribution takes about 24 hours. It usually takes around 3 to 5 days for you to receive your report once the materials reach our geotechnical laboratory, although we also offer a rush rate, depending on your needs.

When to use geotech laboratory testing?

Most construction projects — including infrastructure, civil, and solar — need at least some geotechnical laboratory testing. Soil testing ensures your project has a solid foundation and enables you to adjust your plans to suit its environment. Concrete and aggregate testing ensure your materials are up to code and meet your high quality standards. If you are unsure if your project requires geotech laboratory testing, contact us.
