On an immersed-tube tunnel, the river conditions drive the construction sequence. A trench is dredged into the riverbed, precast segments are floated out and lowered into place, and the completed tube is protected against scour and vessel strike. Each step depends on the actual ground and water conditions, which is why the strongest bids are grounded in early site data rather than assumptions.
Three realities tend to drive both cost and risk. In-water work windows are narrow and set by fisheries timing and the freshet, so the construction calendar, more than the contract date, often determines what is achievable in a season. The Fraser's soft alluvial ground raises real questions about settlement and how the segments bed in, which careful geotechnical characterization answers before they become problems in the field. And scour, seismic performance, and the behaviour of the trench during construction all reward analysis done early, when there is still time to design for them.
